Description

A comforting casserole featuring tender potatoes layered with seasoned ground beef and topped with melted cheese, perfect for a family meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 medium potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter or cooking oil
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme, minced
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 teaspoon salt (to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon bouillon powder (or extra salt)
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon oregano
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish, optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Peel and slice the potatoes thinly, making sure they are about 1/8-inch thick.
  3. In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the onion, garlic, and thyme; sauté until the onion is translucent, about 4-5 minutes.
  4. Add the ground beef and break it up as it cooks until browned, then season with salt, pepper, bouillon powder, oregano, and paprika.
  5. Drain the excess fat and sprinkle the flour over the beef mixture, stirring to combine.
  6. Gradually pour in the beef broth and milk, stirring constantly until thickened and creamy.
  7. Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish. Arrange half of the potatoes, then half of the beef mixture, and repeat for a hearty layering effect.
  8. Cover with foil and bake for about 45 minutes, or until the potatoes are fork-tender.
  9. Uncover, sprinkle cheese on top, and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes until the cheese is golden and bubbly.
  10. Let cool for a few minutes, garnish with parsley, and serve.

Notes

For an extra crispy topping, broil the casserole for a minute or two after baking. Use a mix of cheeses for added flavor.
