Description
Delicious apple crisp topped with a cozy, crunchy oat mixture, perfect for fall gatherings.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup (84 g) old-fashioned rolled oats
- ½ cup (70 g) all-purpose flour
- ½ cup (100 g) dark brown sugar
- ½ tsp cinnamon
- ¼ tsp salt
- ½ cup (112 g) cold unsalted butter, cubed
- ⅔ cup (133 g) granulated sugar (reduce to ½ cup if apples are extra sweet)
- 3 Tbsp (24 g) arrowroot starch (or cornstarch)
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- ¼ tsp salt
- 7 cups (840 g) peeled, diced apples
- ½ tsp pure almond extract (sub vanilla, amaretto, bourbon, or dark rum if you like)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F and place a foil-lined rimmed baking sheet inside.
- For the crumble topping: mix oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt in a bowl; cut in cold butter until large crumbs form. Chill in the freezer while preparing the filling.
- For the apple filling: whisk sugar, starch, cinnamon, and salt in a bowl. Add diced apples and almond extract, then gently toss to coat.
- Spoon the apple mixture into your prepared skillet or baking dish. Scatter the chilled crumble topping evenly over the apples.
- Bake on the preheated rimmed sheet for 55–60 minutes until the topping is golden and juices are bubbling. Rest for at least 30 minutes before serving.
Notes
Chilling the crumble topping before baking creates a crispier texture.
