An easy and flavorful Slow Cooker Sloppy Joes recipe perfect for busy weeknights. Made with ground beef, vegetables, and a tangy tomato sauce, this recipe is a family favorite.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1.5 pounds ground beef (80/20 or 85/15 fat content)
  • 1 large yellow onion, chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 (15-ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar (light or dark)
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon dry mustard powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper, or to taste
  • Pinch of red pepper flakes (optional)

Instructions

  1. 1. In a large skillet, brown ground beef over medium-high heat. Drain off excess grease.
  2. 2. Add chopped onion and green bell pepper to the skillet with the beef. Cook for 5-7 minutes until slightly softened.
  3. 3. Stir in minced garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
  4. 4. Transfer the beef and vegetable mixture to your slow cooker.
  5. 5. In a medium bowl, whisk together tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, apple cider vinegar, and dry mustard powder.
  6. 6. Pour the sauce mixture over the beef and vegetables in the slow cooker.
  7. 7. Add salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes (if using). Stir to combine.
  8. 8. Cover and cook on LOW for 6-8 hours or on HIGH for 2-3 hours.
  9. 9. Stir well before serving and adjust seasoning if needed.

Notes

Allow mixture to cool completely before refrigerating or freezing. Store in airtight containers for up to 3-4 days in the refrigerator, or up to 2-3 months in the freezer. Reheat on the stovetop, in the microwave, or in the slow cooker.
