- 1.5 pounds ground beef (80/20 or 85/15 fat content)
- 1 large yellow onion, chopped
- 1 green bell pepper, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 (15-ounce) can tomato sauce
- 1/2 cup ketchup
- 1/4 cup packed brown sugar (light or dark)
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
- 1 teaspoon dry mustard powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt, or to taste
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper, or to taste
- Pinch of red pepper flakes (optional)
Instructions
- 1. In a large skillet, brown ground beef over medium-high heat. Drain off excess grease.
- 2. Add chopped onion and green bell pepper to the skillet with the beef. Cook for 5-7 minutes until slightly softened.
- 3. Stir in minced garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
- 4. Transfer the beef and vegetable mixture to your slow cooker.
- 5. In a medium bowl, whisk together tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, apple cider vinegar, and dry mustard powder.
- 6. Pour the sauce mixture over the beef and vegetables in the slow cooker.
- 7. Add salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes (if using). Stir to combine.
- 8. Cover and cook on LOW for 6-8 hours or on HIGH for 2-3 hours.
- 9. Stir well before serving and adjust seasoning if needed.
Notes
Allow mixture to cool completely before refrigerating or freezing. Store in airtight containers for up to 3-4 days in the refrigerator, or up to 2-3 months in the freezer. Reheat on the stovetop, in the microwave, or in the slow cooker.
