Ingredients

  • 1.5 pounds ground beef
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1.5 pounds potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1 can (10.5 ounces) condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • Optional: 1/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • Optional: 1 teaspoon dried thyme or rosemary
  • Optional: 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Brown ground beef in a skillet; drain grease. Add chopped onion and cook until softened. Stir in minced garlic and cook for 1 minute.
  3. Whisk together condensed cream of mushroom soup and milk in a bowl. Season with salt and pepper.
  4. Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the baking dish.
  5. Spread the ground beef and onion mixture over the potatoes.
  6. Layer the remaining sliced potatoes over the beef mixture.
  7. Pour the soup mixture evenly over the top layer of potatoes.
  8. Cover the dish tightly with aluminum foil.
  9. Bake for 50 minutes.
  10. Remove foil, sprinkle with cheddar cheese if desired.
  11. Return to oven, uncovered, and bake for another 10-15 minutes until potatoes are tender and cheese is melted and bubbly.
  12. Let rest for 5-10 minutes before serving.

Notes

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. Reheat in the oven at 350°F (175°C) covered with foil until heated through, or microwave on medium power.
