Description

A comforting and flavorful dish featuring tender chicken coated in crunchy pretzel crumbs and smothered in a creamy mustard-cheddar sauce. Easy enough for a weeknight, delightful enough for guests.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ½ pounds boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs, cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 1 ½ cups crushed pretzels (about 4 ounces)
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
  • ¼ cup milk (or buttermilk)
  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon whole grain mustard
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese (about 4 ounces)
  • ½ cup heavy cream (or half-and-half)
  • ¼ cup chicken broth (low sodium preferred)
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • Optional Garnish: Fresh parsley, chopped

Instructions

  1. 1. Prepare the pretzel coating in shallow dishes.
  2. 2. Dredge chicken pieces in flour, then egg mixture, then pretzel crumbs.
  3. 3. Heat butter and oil in an oven-safe skillet over medium-high heat.
  4. 4. Brown chicken in batches, 3-4 minutes per side. Remove chicken.
  5. 5. Add chicken broth to skillet and scrape up browned bits. Simmer for 1 minute.
  6. 6. Pour in heavy cream and bring to a simmer.
  7. 7. Whisk in cheddar cheese until melted and sauce is smooth. Season.
  8. 8. Return chicken to skillet, nestling it into the sauce.
  9. 9. Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 8-10 minutes, or until chicken is cooked through and sauce is bubbling.
  10. 10. Garnish with parsley and serve hot.

Notes

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. Reheat in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for best results to retain some crispness.
