- 1 block (14-16 ounces) extra-firm tofu
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
- 1/4 cup nutritional yeast (optional)
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- Vegetable oil or other neutral high-heat oil, for frying (about 1-2 cups)
Instructions
- 1. Press and slice tofu into 1/2-inch thick pieces.
- 2. Set up three shallow dishes: one with flour, salt, pepper; one with 2 tbsp water/plant milk; one with panko, nutritional yeast (optional), garlic powder, onion powder.
- 3. Dredge tofu in flour, dip in liquid, then coat thoroughly in panko mixture.
- 4. Heat 1-2 cups of oil in a skillet to 350°F (175°C).
- 5. Fry tofu for 3-5 minutes per side until golden brown and crispy.
- 6. Drain on a wire rack.
Notes
For crispiest results, reheat in oven or toaster oven at 375°F (190°C) for 8-12 minutes. Avoid microwaving.
